3 Cozy Winter Drink Recipes That Warm Our Home & Soothe our Souls

Well, it finally happened. This morning, as I headed out for my daily walk, I felt that unmistakable chill in the air. Snow dusted the mountain tops, and tiny flakes floated down around me. It won’t be long now. Soon everything will be tucked under a soft, snowy blanket that makes the world feel just a little more magical. And if you’re anything like me, that first snowfall triggers a deep craving—not just for fuzzy socks and flannel blankets—but for making sure my home feels like a warm hug. As a homemaker, I truly believe it’s my responsibility, my calling, and my joy, to set the tone for our family. And when the world outside turns icy, I turn to our favorite 3 cozy hygge inspired hot winter drinks to warm our home and soothe our souls.
Let me first preface all this by saying that my efforts in this area are far from perfect. But this is a space where I feel deeply called to show up with intention, even when it’s messy. And if there’s one thing, I’m learning in these 15 years of being a homemaker, a mom, and everything in between, it’s this… it’s not about perfection. It’s about being as intentional as possible with our actions in the midst of exhaustion and overwhelm. It’s about planting seeds of family life. Then trusting the Lord to grow those moments of obedience and perseverance, though imperfect as they may be, into connection and lasting memories.
Ok, so with keeping that in mind….
Sally Clarkson says it best: “Cultivating the life of a home requires intentionality, planning, and design.” Since, I’ve heard it, that wisdom has been my anchor through life’s whirlwind seasons—when juggling busy schedules, work, activities, sickness, homemaking, homesteading and whatever else life throws at me. I’ve leaned on that truth to shape a home that feels hopefully purposeful and peaceful in the chaos. And one of my favorite ways to cultivate that, intentional atmosphere is through the Danish concept of hygge.
What Is Hygge, Anyway?
Creating a Cozy Home
If you’ve never heard of hygge (pronounced “hoo-gah”), it’s a Danish word that doesn’t translate perfectly into English—but think of it as the art of coziness. It’s about creating a warm atmosphere and enjoying the good things in life with good people. Hygge is candlelight flickering on the mantle, a soft blanket tucked around your toes, laughter at family game night, and yes—steaming mugs of something delicious in your hands.
While I do try to cultivate hygge in our daily life, I’ll admit—it often slips through the cracks when our schedules get packed and my to-do list grows longer. No, I’m not consciencely thinking every morning when I wake up, “Oh I must live a Hygge life today.” But I’m always reminded of its importance when we start to feel disconnected or stretched too thin. That’s usually my cue to pause and reassess how I want our school days to feel, how we spend time together as a family, how we relax, and how we reconnect. One of the simplest ways I bring hygge back—especially during the winter months—is by engaging the senses with the comforting smell, taste, and warmth of our favorite cozy seasonal drinks.
Our 3 Favorite Winter Drink Recipes
Whether we’re gathered around the wood stove for a read-aloud, snuggled in a warm blanket for a movie, taking a break from school to reset emotions, playing a board game, or winding down with some soft music by candlelight, these three drinks are our go-to comfort sips. They’re simple, nostalgic, and full of flavor!
1. Homemade Hot Cocoa
Let’s start with the classic. There’s just something about homemade hot cocoa that feels like a warm embrace. Not the powdered stuff in a packet, but the real deal. Rich cocoa, creamy milk, a touch of vanilla, and maybe a dollop of whipped cream if we’re feeling fancy.
This is our go-to warm drink after morning chores when kids come in with red cheeks and frozen fingers. I make it in a bulk batch and store it in a half gallon jar, for anyone to easily mix up. While it does have sugar in it, you can certainly feel good about giving it to your kiddos as a clean alternative treat, to store bought hot chocolate which has added fillers and questionable ingredients.
I love pairing hot cocoa with our read-aloud time. There’s something magical about sipping something warm while diving into a good story together. I’m pretty sure it’s scientifically proven, somewhere, that cocoa increases imagination receptors in the brain. So, there ya go, the science is settled.

2. Russian Tea / Amish Friendship Tea / Tula Tea – Whatever you want to call it
This one has many names but is a bit of a nostalgic treasure. Russian Tea is traditionally a citrusy, spiced tea blend that smells like Christmas and tastes like comfort. It’s made with black tea, orange juice, lemon juice, cinnamon, and cloves—and it’s the perfect pick-me-up on a gray day.
But for our family, when it comes to this recipe, it’s one of those guilty pleasures where we throw health out the window and go for ease by using Tang, instant iced tea and a good old fashioned instant lemonade. I know, I know, judge all you want, I’m totally ok with it. But I’ve never been able to get that same flavor that I remember as a kid sipping on this sweet and spicy concoction, with the “natural” recipes that I’ve found for this one.
When someone in our homeschool crew is having a tough time—whether it’s math tears or just a case of the blahs—we’ll pause, make a mug of Russian Tea, and let the aroma do its magic. It’s amazing how a warm drink can help collect emotions and refocus the heart.
Russian Instant Tea Mix
A classic hot beverage with warm spices and tangy citrus goodness.
Ingredients
- 1 Cup Sugar
- 1 Cup Instant Iced Tea Mix (like Lipton unsweetened iced tea)
- 2 Cups Tang Powdered Orange Drink Mix
- 1 Cup Instant Lemonade Mix (we like Country Time brand)
- 1 Teaspoon Cinnamon
- 1/2 Teaspoon Ground Gloves
Instructions
- Pour all ingredients into a plastic zip bag or a large bowl
- Shake in zipped plastic bag or use a whisk to gently mix together in large bowl
- Store in sealing jar or container
- Mix 3 to 4 tablespoons of mixture in a mug of hot water, about 1 cup. Adjust to taste
3. Old-Fashioned Mulled Cider

This one’s a fall-to-winter staple in our home. Whether its apple cider simmered on the wood stove with cinnamon sticks and cloves or a spiced version with a splash of orange, this drink is pure comfort. The scent alone is enough to make the house feel like a cozy cabin in the woods.
We love serving cider during family game nights. It’s festive without being fussy, and the kids feel like they’re getting a special treat.
I’ve written more about our love for apple cider and our family’s tradition of making cider with our antique cider press, here. You’ll also find our families favorite “Old-Fashioned Apple Cider” recipe there!

Engaging the Senses: Smell, Taste, Feel
How to create Hygge moments
One of the reasons these drinks are so powerful in our home is because they engage the senses. The smell of cinnamon and cocoa, the taste of citrus and spice, the feel of a warm mug in your hands—it’s all part of the experience. These sensory moments help anchor our memories and create a rhythm of comfort and connection.
In a world that moves fast, these small rituals slow us down. They remind us that home isn’t just a place—it’s a feeling we cultivate, one sip at a time.
Hygge for the Heart
A Mama’s Reminder to Choose Presence Over Perfection
If you’re a mama who’s struggling to create those picture-perfect memories, let me gently remind you as I remind myself: it’s not about perfection. It’s about presence. It’s about showing up, lighting the candle, pouring the cocoa, and being there.
Some days, the house is messy, the kids are cranky, and the laundry is winning. But even then, we can create a moment. We can pause, brew something warm, and invite our family to slow down with us…. or maybe we need to slow down with them.
You’re doing holy work, mama. You’re building a home, one intentional choice at a time.
A Word of Encouragement
Kindness, warmth, and wisdom—they’re the ingredients of a home that nourishes the soul. Sometimes, they don’t show up in grand gestures or profound words. Sometimes, they arrive as a hot drink passed around the table, a candle flickering in the corner, and the simple act of being together.
So, on those days where you feel that your kindness, warmth, and wisdom are running thin- go ahead and light that candle. Pour the cocoa. And invite your people in. You’re still creating something beautiful… even when silence says more than words ever could.
